Body Burden Chemicals

Synthetic chemicals and heavy metals of all kinds build up in our bodies
Starting even before we are born.

We are exposed to them through food we eat, air we breathe, and water we drink and bathe in. We may inhale them, swallow them, or absorb them through our skin. A pregnant woman may pass the them to her unborn baby.

There are hundreds of them around us, in everyday products we use or that are around us. Products like paints, varnishes, glues, gasoline, solvents, pesticides, household cleaners, personal care products like soaps, lotions and cosmetic to name just a few.

How long do they stay in our bodies?

Some lodge in our bodies for only a short while before being excreted, but continuous expose can create a “persistent” body burden.

Others are not readily excreted and can remain in our blood, body tissues, muscles, and organs for many years.

What are the health affects?

They have different effect depending on the amount, timing, duration and pattern of exposure, and the properties of the chemical. They can have lasting toxic effects.

They can attack and damage or kill cells or tissues in the body. Some attack the genetic material in the nucleus of a cell, causing damage directly to the DNA. This can lead to gene mutations, which can set in motion a sequence of events leading to cancer, birth defects, developmental or reproductive disorders.

We need to be educated and use that knowledge to make better choices of what we allow around us, what we eat and drink, and what we use in and on our bodies.

The term “body burden” refers to the total amount that are present in the human body at a given point in time.
