Benefits and Properties
of Geranium Essential Oil

B>Botanical Name
Pelagonium graveolens ; Pelagonium asperum

Family
Geraniaceae geranium family

Place of Origin
South Africa, now grown in Russia, Egypt, Reunion, Algeria, Morocco, the Congo, Japan, China, Central America and Europe, Spain, Italy, and France

Plant Description
It is a flower and also called a herb. There are over 700 species of this plant, only two are used in aromatherapy.

Essential Oil
It is steam distilled from the leaves, and sometimes the stalks and flowers. The oil is greenish to sometimes brownish-yellow in color with a green, sweet, rose-like fragrance that is slightly minty. It is a middle note oil.

Contains
The principle constituents are geraniol and citronellol with smaller amounts of linaol, limonene, terpineol, isomenthone, alcohols, others

Blends well with
Basil, bergamot, citrus oils, citronella, fennel, lavender, rose, many others

Safety
Do not take internally, non-toxic, non-irritating, avoid in pregnancy as it is emmenagogue.

Approximate drops per use
Use about 3-4 drops in 1 ounce of carrier

Beneficial Effects – Physical
Anit-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, fungicide, vermifuge, vulnerary, antihemorrhage, deodorant, haemostatic (stops bleeding)

Specific Conditions – Physical
Burns, wounds, cuts, ulcers, acne, bruises, sprains, muscular pain, hemorrhoids, lice, insect repellent, poor circulation, chilblains, gout, arthritis, sore throat, flu, bronchitis, coughs, colds, tonsillitis, edema, eczema, dermatitis, diarrhea, nausea, travel sickness, reduces fever, stimulates the appetite,

Geranium is non-irritating with a pleasant, uplifting scent so it can be used with most people. It is an alcohol and because of the esters it works differently on different people, it can relaxing or stimulating. It works great for depression and assists the reproductive and lymphatic systems and the skin.

This oil can also work well for people who are in emotional shock, use in a standard dilution for a spot massage or even a full body massage.

For yeast infections (Candida albicans) for both women and men geranium can be helpful as a standard dilution massage on the body and you can apply a warm compress if desired. Also diffuse the oil or inhale from a clothe or bottle.

For allergies try mixing in a standard dilution with chamomile and lavender and massage into the back of the neck, throat and around the nose.

Use on frostbite in a standard dilution with a small amount of clover, then massage gently.

It is a nice oil to use in the winter as it can help with colds and coughs and chilblains (cracks from cold and exposure). Use as a massage, compress, and inhale.

If you have a cold sore put a drop on a cotton ball and apply to the affected area.

Use the oil in a warm compression for bruises and sprains, equal parts rosemary and lavender to the warm water also. Also massage the area with a standard dilution of these oils before wrapping. It can help to speed healing.

Do you have dry chapped skin? For a quick remedy add a few drops of this oil to your lotion or oil and treat your skin. You can also make a salve for soothing heavier healing. When making your salve just before pouring it into the containers stir in around 10 drops each of geranium and chamomile and 5 drops each of lavender and lemon. You can even use this on chapped lips. It is even antiseptic and can help with acne, apply at night before going to bed.

This oil works well for oily, dry and combination skin and smells pleasant which makes it a good choice to use in your skin care products.

Use it in salves for wounds, scrapes and cuts to sooth, help stop bleeding, and speed healing. If bleeding is really bad and you need something in a hurry try adding a drop of this oil neat.

It stimulates the lymphatic system and also has a diuretic action, these two properties work together helping the body to eliminate fluids and working as a tonic on the liver and kidneys. This action of geranium make it good for helping with conditions like jaundice, kidney stone and other urinary tract infections

Use it in a insect repellent room spray as it has a pleasant smell and also will help keep the room free from flying pests. Try combining it with other oils like citronella, lemongrass, bergamot and lemon.

Because it can be stimulating to some you may not want to use it too close to when you are wanting to sleep unless you want to combine it with a sedative oil like lavender.
