Using Oils is not complicated.

When using oils there are basically three ways in which the essential oils can enter your body. So adding oils to your life style is easy to do. Just pick out which methods work best for you and start expermenting. Don’t worry about learning everything about them first. The best way to learn is to just pick a few out and start using them. Just be sure and follow the safety cautions.

When using oils there are three routes in which essential oils enter the blood stream:

* Inhalation * Dermal Absorption * Ingestion

The most common are Inhalation and Dermal Absorption.

* Inhalation

This is using inhalation as a method to get the therapeutic value of the oil into your system, * Essential oils travel into the lungs then enter the blood stream * The essential oil constituents travel throughout the body * The constituents may directly cross the blood brain barrier

You can inhale directly from the bottle, add a drop to a tissue, use steam, or a diffuser.

* Dermal (skin) Absorption

Essential oils have very small molecular weights, which means the oils will permeate the skin and enter the blood stream. Then they will travel throughout the body.

Since essential oils are highly concentrated, a carrier helps to dilute and distribute the essential oil easily over the skin. So always use a carrier that is unscented and toxin free. A carrier is a substance that delivers or transports essential oils to your body in a responsible manner, like an oil or lotion.

The best place to apply essential oils mixed with a carrier is: * Bottoms of feet * Palms of hands * Pulse points of body - like the wrist * Area of pain - like your shoulder, back, temple, forehead, legs, stomach, burns, scratches, bug bites, etc.

Try using essential oils in body massages, hand and foot massages, and relaxing baths. They are wonderful to use in these ways.

* Ingestion

With this method the essential oils permeate the intestinal membrane and enter the blood stream and then travel throughout the body.

CAUTION: Essential oils should only be taken internally when recommended by and with the supervision of an health care professional with a knowledge of essential oils.

There are a few exceptions some which are:

* 1-2 drops of grapefruit oil placed in a glass of drinking water is useful for curbing the appetite and may assist with constipation

* 1 drop of peppermint oil placed in a glass of drinking water, placed on the back of the hand and licked off or dropped on a sugar cube may help with heatburn, motion sickness, and upset tummies.

How will I respond to essential oils?

Only your body knows how you will respond to essential oils. Some people are sensitive. If you are a first-time user, have fair skin, or are using the oils with children or babies, take precautions. Dilute the oils using unscented and toxin free carrier lotion or carrier oils.

In random cases, essential oils applied directly to the skin may result in a rash. Some people may seem to experience a detoxification or flu-like symptoms when using the oils for the first time. Detoxification is the releasing of stored toxins from the body. People who have experienced difficulties using essential oils in the past may have been applying oils that were adulterated by either synthetic or natural means. Using oils that are pure, raw, natural, and therapeutic rarely cause problems when used correctly.

Also different people may respond to using oils differently. One person may have quick results with an oil and another person may not have any noticeable results at all at first. You will have to find what works best for you. Everyone is different, just as a drug can work differently from one person to the next so can essential oils. So you just need to be using oils and paying attention to how you respond to them.

Here are some possible mixing suggestions for using oils:


Mix 8 to 12 drops of essential oil with your unscented, toxin free bath gel. Then relax in the tub for about 20 minutes and rest for around 30 minutes afterwards. It will really refresh and pick up your spirit


Add 25 to 35 drops essential oil per 1 oz. of massage oil or lotion. Massage into skin. (10 drops per 1 oz for children and less for infants.)


Place 2 to 10 drops essential oil on a tissue or towel, then inhale. Rub a few drops essential oil and carrier oil into palms, then cup hands and inhale. Add a few drops of essential oil to small amount of hot water and inhale the steam. (put a towel tent over your head and bowl for maximum benefits)


To a clean bowl, add 5 to 8 drops essential oil to 3/4 cup steaming hot or cold water. Mix to disperse oils. Place a clean cloth into the bowl to absorb the liquid. Press out excess liquid. Apply compress to desired area, followed by plastic wrap, topped with a dry towel. Leave on for up to 2 hours.

Body Lotion

Add 5 to 30 drops of essential oil to 1 oz of unscented, toxin free lotion. Mix.
